The Monica Quan and Keith Lawrence Basketball Foundation was created to celebrate the memory of Monica and Keith for their love of basketball. Monica and Keith were both outstanding high school basketball and soccer players. They were both very much alike and possessed the same values. They never complained about bad calls or being knocked down. Monica and Keith would just pick themselves up and keep playing. Monica and Keith were unselfish pass first point guards. When you played with Monica or Keith, be ready to receive the basketball, or it will bounce off your head. They made the players around them better. They were both the type of players no one wanted to play against, but everyone wanted to play with. They were your biggest nightmare as an opponent and your best friend off the court.
They both went on to play basketball in college. Monica at Long Beach State University and Keith at Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo. They both later transferred to Concordia University, Irvine to play basketball where they met and fell in love. After approximately five years of dating Keith proposed to Monica and in February, 2013, Keith and Monica shared the news with the Lawrence family. On that evening when they returned to their home, a deranged man murdered Keith and Monica while they were still seated in their vehicle and ended their young lives too soon. Monica and Keith always spoke about how the women’s basketball programs were not supported like the men’s program and they both wanted to help change that.
The foundation was created to help fulfill their hope and wish to support and promote the love of women’s basketball, good sportsmanship, leadership and lifelong friendships.
